Sun and Shade
Sunlight and Shade how it can affects your lawn.
Grass will not grow without light. For a healthy lawn more
light is usually better then not enough light.
Healthy Lawn = Grass must receive enough light to grow healthy
+ any other requirements or condition needed.
Some things
that can affect your grass from not getting
enough sunlight.
- To much shade from trees
- The combined shade from a building and from trees or tall
bushes.
Is your lawn getting to
much shade?
The grass in the lawn will need to receive a certain amount of
light to stay healthy.
Trying to determine if your lawn is getting to much shade may be
confusing!.
Check to see if the trouble areas are receiving more shade than other
areas of your lawn.
This may a take a little time and patience because the amount of
light received for a certain area of lawn can be different and most the
time the shade or sun received for one area or section is different than
the sun and shade received for another area. For instance if your looking
at a trouble area in you
lawn try to considered and determine if this area is getting to much
shade.
Trying to check a problem area in your lawn by looking at
the area to see if it is getting direct sunlight may not
be good enough, you may need to check to make sure it is
receiving the sunlight for the full length of time required
for the day. Some types of grass may require 6 hours of direct
sunlight. I have heard some types of grass need 8 hours of
direct sunlight.
As the sun moves the shade in your lawn will change as the sun
moves. You may need to take this into consideration
and check the problem areas at different times and different
season of the year. Because the shade of a area can change
according to the time of the year and the time of day. I also
explained a little about reflections and light brightness
below.
. The are also
other condition that may affect the amount of light your lawn is
receiving. Any shade that is preventing sunlight from passing through
and reaching your lawn may affect the health of the grass in that area .
Some Consequences of Grass
not acquiring enough light could be.
- This can kill the grass.
- The grass may only grow partially and will not grow thick.
- There may be areas or spots with dirt and no grass.
This may help you try to
determine if a area is getting to much Shade!
Determine the total light received during the entire day for the
unhealthy
section of your lawn.
Once you have done that you will know how much sunlight is reaching
this area.
You will then have more knowledge about how much sunlight this area is
getting and not getting.
You may need to considered how much light is getting through the
shade.
Then
again the light be reflected into a shaded area giving the grass
necessary light to grow healthy. The grass leaf needs to receive enough
light to produce enough photosynthesis to make food to keep
it
healthy.
There are certain types of grass
that grow a little better than other types of grass in a low
light or shade condition.
A widely used and very practical type of
grass is ST. AUGUSTINE GRASS there are several types of St.
Augustine
grass. Some types grow better in the shade than other types. The
floratam St Augustine grass requires more sunlight compared to the
other types.
